University of Miami Student Group Visit to Everglades National Park

Father Christian Saenz, S.J. led our University of Miami student group on an outing to Everglades National Park last Saturday.  They hiked the Anhinga Trail which is named after one of the most abundant and recognizable water birds in the Everglades.  The students were able to see alligators, turtles, birds, and other wildlife up close.

The trip also included a private tour given by a National Park Service ranger of a decommissioned nuclear missile defense site.  The missiles were installed in the Everglades in 1964 in response to the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba when tensions were at their highest between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War.  The missiles were removed from the park in 1979.
